Nicolau Eimeric

Posted on 21/01/201701/02/2017 By Oriol Catalán

Dominican friar (1320-1399) also spelled Nicholas Eymerich or Aymerich. He was appointed Inquisitor General in Aragon (1358), but his strict theological points of view led to disagrements with king Peter of Aragon and to the withdrawal from the position (1360). He was again appointed General Inquisitor twice, but his radical positions against the followers of Ramon Llull made him to be sent to exile. During these periods in exile, he lived in Avignon, supporting Popes Clement VII and Benedict XIII.

Better known as author of one of the most successful manuals for Inquisitors (Directorium Inquisitorum) and pursuer of Lullism, Nicolau Eimeric wrote sermons as well. Two manuscript are extant:

  • Sevilla, Biblioteca Capitular y Colombina, ms. 123-3-2 (olim 141-23-11, De communi sanctorum)
  • Sevilla, Biblioteca Capitular y Colombina, ms. 123-3-7 (olim 141-23-16, Sermones dominicales)

Today is Candlemas, a festival of light in the lengthening days of early spring. An Anglo-Saxon sermon for this ancient and beautiful feast, when 'þæt soðe Leoht, Crist, wæs geboren to þam temple' ('the true Light, Christ, was borne to the temple'): https://aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2012/01/lfric-on-candlemas-twofold-burgeoning.html
